Artist Statement

I absolutely love the way art pulls on one’s emotions and represents so many different aspects of life. It embodies a language the artist communicates through his/her work. My art teacher once gave me a simple sticky note with a significant quote on it which I feel embodies the theme of my art, "Can you feel a makers heart while viewing a makers art". I strive to put emotion, and soul in all my art, be it a simple sketch, or a detailed drawing.

Every artist has a source or influence, it is what makes art art. Without it a painting would simply be a painting, a drawing would simply be a drawing, and a creator would not have any motivation. Before working on a project or a piece, I do not just sit down and draw, I need to be inspired. I tend to take inspiration from drama felt through poems, thinking on long drives, and looking at others' art. Some art is based off current issues, such as my charcoal tiger, which is designed to show animal endangerment. With this I also learned to develop my art skills.

I feel I have learned the importance of working with a full depth of field, and how to properly draw proportions. I work often on drawing people and studying anatomy as to understand how to draw an arm without it looking like a deformed carrot. I have also learned to try new medias, such as charcoal. Charcoal had always been a daunting material for me to attempt, due to how easily it smudges, how dark it is, and how difficult it is to erase; but I gave it a shot and it quickly became my favorite medium. I love the depth and drama one is able to achieve and communicate. The baby face made from charcoal, though photo based, is what sparked my love of this new medium.

I also tend to be somewhat competitive. At the beginning of the year an art substitute taught our art class and he brought his sketch book with him. It was full incredible ink drawings, and I was both angered by the fact I was not able to draw with pen and inspired to practice more. This has led to many art sketches, the collage in the watercolor section being one of them. Although these pieces include paints, I drew with pen and used it to practice crosshatching.

In relation to Contemporary art some of my work represents the messy modern style. My digital art, shows this concept well. It was originally a messy quick sketch which transformed to a piece of art. The bones are scratched on, the flowers, though muted, help to add a pop of color, and the pale green was added as a color contrast and to show a more natural feel. The piece, labeled Beauty was meant to represent unfair and unrealistic beauty standards inflicted by society.
